FitFlop Founder, Marcia KilgoreDr David Cook and Darren James We all feel happier when we’re in good shape, but finding time to exercise is often more difficult than exercise itself. Inspired by her lack of time, FitFlop’s founder, Marcia Kilgore (who started both Soap & Glory and the Bliss Spa chain, a one-time personal trainer and busy working mother), set herself a huge personal challenge: Create a shoe that makes walking a more effective form of exercise AND is also fashion-friendly. To help with the technical side of things, she enlisted expert biomechanists Dr David Cook and Darren James at the Human Performance Centre at London’s Southbank University. And, after two long years of tests and trials, the first FitFlop sandals hit the shelves. Within weeks of their launch in May 2007, testimonials started pouring in from delighted pain-free FitFlop sandal wearers, detailing not only improved posture but also relief from chronic lower back aches, knee pain, plantar foot pain (from heel spurs and plantar fasciitis) and dozens of other conditions.
The FITFLOP phenomenon was quickly picked up by the press. In 2007 Newsweek called FITFLOP the ‘must-have item of the summer’ while the Independent Newspaper (UK) hailed FITFLOP sandals as ‘miraculous’. FITFLOP also became to only footwear to be featured on Oprah’s ‘Favorite Summer Things ‘ list (July 2008). FitFlop fans turned into fanatics, buying multiple pairs and begging for biomechanically engineered boots and shoes. Our sandals became the most searched term of the summer on AOL, the most read article on the timesonline and the first ever high fashion fitness sandal sold on Net-a-porter.com (as well as Net-a-porter’s fastest selling footwear item ever). To date (2009), we have sold over 4 million pairs of sandals in 48 countries. APMA While we love all the fanfare, the countless testimonials and the numerous celebrity sightings, it’s something more profound that has- of late- made us particularly proud: FitFlop has received the American Podiatric Medical Association Seal of Acceptance. This highly regarded seal is awarded only after a rigorous process of scientific evaluation and recognises products which have been deemed beneficial to foot health. To us it’s official recognition (and the biomechanical backup) from the medical experts that FITFLOP footwear is one of the ‘industry best’. We’re now putting our patent-pending Microwobbleboard™ technology into even more styles so that women, men and children can enjoy FITFLOP benefits to all year ‘round. As well as our original flip flop sandals, we offer fashion-friendly slides, clogs, and boots (with trainers, hiking shoes, and leather boots also in the works).
So, soon, whether you’re hiking, holidaying, lounging, shopping or working, you can do it in a FitFlop shoe and get a workout while you walk™
